The Plot

The film begins in 2003, when Mark Zuckerberg, a Harvard student and computer programmer, breaks up with his girlfriend Erica Albright. He returns to his dorm room and creates a website called Facemash, which allows users to compare the attractiveness of female students. The website becomes popular but also causes controversy and damages the university's network. Zuckerberg is punished by the university administration but also gains the attention of Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, twin brothers and rowers who want him to work on their idea of a social networking site for Harvard students.

Zuckerberg agrees to help them but also secretly works on his own project with his friend Eduardo Saverin, who provides the initial funding. They launch Thefacebook, a site that allows users to create profiles, upload photos, and connect with other students. The site becomes a huge success and expands to other universities. However, Zuckerberg also faces challenges from the Winklevoss twins, who accuse him of stealing their idea and sue him for intellectual property theft. He also meets Sean Parker, the co-founder of Napster, who becomes his mentor and influences him to move to Silicon Valley and seek more investors.

As Facebook grows, so does Zuckerberg's fame and fortune. However, he also alienates his friends and partners, especially Saverin, who is eventually forced out of the company after a dilution of his shares. The film ends with Zuckerberg settling the lawsuits with the Winklevoss twins and Saverin, but also being alone and refreshing his Facebook page, hoping for a response from Erica.

The Review

The Social Network is a fascinating and compelling film that explores the themes of ambition, friendship, betrayal, and innovation. The film is based on the book The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich, which was itself based on interviews and documents from various sources. The film does not claim to be a factual account of the events but rather a dramatization of them.

The film is well-directed by Fincher, who creates a fast-paced and engaging narrative that keeps the audience hooked. The film also features a brilliant screenplay by Sorkin, who mixes witty dialogue, flashbacks, courtroom scenes, and voice-overs to create a complex and layered story. The film also benefits from a superb cast, especially Eisenberg, who delivers a nuanced and convincing performance as Zuckerberg. He portrays him as a genius but also a flawed and insecure person who struggles with social skills and emotions. The film also features excellent performances from Garfield as Saverin, Timberlake as Parker, Hammer as the Winklevoss twins, and Mara as Erica.

The Social Network is not only a film about Facebook but also a film about the human condition. It shows how people can be driven by their dreams but also corrupted by their ego. It shows how people can create connections but also destroy them. It shows how people can change the world but also lose themselves in it.

The Verdict

The Social Network is one of the best films of the decade and a must-watch for anyone interested in technology, business, or drama. It is a film that will make you think, feel, and wonder about the social network that you are part of.
